My book club told me to read a 900 page novel in one week

Last month my book club in Denver picked 'The Executioner's Song' by Norman Mailer. That thing is huge. Our host Sarah said just skim the boring parts. I tried that and missed half the plot. Ended up staying up until 3am three nights in a row. Has anyone else had a book club pick that was way too long?

My book club here in Portland did something similar with Infinite Jest a few years back. I swear the book is like 1100 pages with footnotes that take up half the page. The worst part was the host kept saying "just read the endnotes" but they were referencing stuff from chapter 2 that I hadn't gotten to yet. I gave up around page 400 and just pretended I finished it. Nobody in the group actually finished it either, we just sat around eating chips and talking about how long it was.

Did the host actually finish it themselves or were they faking too?
