Just got through a rough book club debate about plot holes

I was at my local library in Portland last night defending a fantasy novel I picked for our group, and three people started tearing it apart because the main character's timeline didn't line up. I ended up admitting I missed a chapter where it explained everything, and now I'm wondering-how do you handle a debate when you realize you're wrong mid-conversation?

This reminds me of a time in my gardening club where I insisted a certain plant would bloom all summer. Another member kept asking about its dormant period, and I got defensive for a good ten minutes before someone pulled out a reference book. Turns out I had the species completely mixed up with something that looked similar. I just laughed and told them they were right, and then I asked the lady with the book to show me where I went wrong. Sometimes you just have to admit you missed something and let the other person have their moment.

Ugh, that stings but honestly happens to the best of us. Nothing worse than that sinking feeling when you realize you've been confidently wrong for like five minutes straight. I'm glad you owned it though, that takes guts in a book club setting where everyone's trying to look smart. Those three people probably respected you more for admitting the mistake instead of doubling down like some folks do. Your library group sounds intense but in a good way, at least they're paying close attention to the plot! Hope you brought snacks next time to soften the blow lol.
