Just found out a huge chunk of our last book club pick was cut from the original

I was reading an interview with the author of 'The Silent Shore' in a magazine at my doctor's office. She said the publisher made her cut over 80 pages before release, mostly character backstory. Our whole group spent an hour debating a character's motivation, and it turns out the scenes explaining it were deleted. I feel like we were arguing over a puzzle with missing pieces. Has your club ever read a book and later found out key info was edited out?

My friend's club read a version missing the whole epilogue explaining the twist.

But what if the missing epilogue made the book better? Sometimes a story is stronger when it leaves you guessing. That twist explanation could feel like the author not trusting readers to figure it out. A clean, sudden ending can stick with you way longer than one that spells everything out.
