I thought audio books were cheating at book club, then our pick last month changed my mind
For two years I skipped audio versions and made myself read every pick with my eyes, because it felt like the only honest way to show up on meeting night. Then in March our group in Boise picked a 640 page history book, and I fell behind by 300 pages with a week to go. Out of panic I grabbed the audio from the library and listened on my commute. I caught three things the fast readers missed, like a name mix up on page 402, and the discussion was better for it. Does your club count audio as reading, or do you all stick to paper only?
The "only honest way to show up" thing is exactly how I used to think about cooking versus takeout, like doing it from scratch was the real version. Then I realized nobody at the table cares how the food got there, only that it showed up and tasted good. Same deal with books, the story gets in either way.
