How a text-focused rule saved our book club debates
Our book club debates were becoming too personal and heated. Last month, during a discussion on a novel with tough themes, voices were raised and feelings were hurt. I realized we were arguing about our own beliefs, not the book's content. To solve this, I proposed a new rule: every point must be tied to a specific passage from the text. We started bringing our copies and reading lines out loud to support our points. This helped keep the debate focused on the author's words, not our biases. Now, our discussions are more respectful and insightful. It was an easy fix that made a big difference.

That's actually genius. Forces everyone to actually engage with the book.

Last semester at community college, forced reading led to more sparknotes use, not REAL engagement. It just turns a fun book into homework for most people.

Ugh this whole thing reminds me of our mandatory safety training videos at work. They MAKE us watch the same boring stuff every year and you just see people zoning out on their phones. Forcing something never gets real buy in, it just teaches people how to fake it better.
