Hot take: 'The Great Gatsby' is actually a boring book and I'm tired of pretending it's not

I sat through my book club's discussion last night and everyone was raving about the 'deep symbolism' and Fitzgerald's prose, but I literally fell asleep three times trying to finish it. The whole plot is just rich people being rude to each other for 180 pages, and that green light metaphor gets mentioned like 50 times. Anyone else think we should pick something with actual action next month?

Disagree completely, I remember being forced to read it in high school and hating it, but rereading it as an adult hit way different. The whole book is this slow burn about chasing a dream that's already dead, and that party scene where Gatsby watches everyone leave feels heavier every time you think about it. Fitzgerald's writing isn't about action, it's about the sadness underneath all the fancy stuff. Maybe give it another shot in a few years.
