Fiction debate blew up at my reading group last Thursday
At our monthly book club downtown, a member insisted that nonfiction is more valuable than fiction for personal growth. She cited studies and statistics, shutting down anyone who disagreed. How do you handle members who turn a book discussion into a debate about genre worth?

We had a similar thing happen at my neighborhood group. One woman kept citing a Malcolm Gladwell book like it was the answer to everything, but she'd never actually read any novels. Somebody finally asked her if she'd ever gotten lost in a story and she just stared at us. I brought up that time I tried to read a biography about Winston Churchill and ended up skimming the last 200 pages because I was bored stiff. It got people laughing and took the heat out of the room.
