Went neon orange with bright pink on a restaurant menu and now nobody orders the featured item

I designed a specials board for a cafe in Austin last week. I thought hot pink text on a neon orange background would grab people's attention. Turns out it just made the words impossible to read from more than 3 feet away. The owner told me sales on that item dropped 40% in 3 days. Has anyone else had a color combo completely backfire on a functional design like a menu or sign?

Oh MAN, that's brutal but also hilarious. Sounds like you accidentally designed a sign that doubles as a stress test for people's retinas.

Lol "stress test for people's retinas" is the perfect way to describe it.
