Saw a mustard and mauve front door in Tucson, weirdly great

I was walking my kids to the library last Tuesday and passed this old bungalow painted a dusty mauve. The owner had just repainted the front door a bright mustard yellow, and my first thought was it would clash something awful. But standing there, the warm tones actually played off each other, like a sunset that got grounded. It made me wonder if that combo works best with older architecture or if it could translate to a modern living room. Has anyone else tried mustard with mauve and had it land well?

Actually that combo has been around way longer than people think. I remember seeing mustard and mauve in my grandmother's kitchen from the 70s, though she paired it with harvest gold appliances which was a lot. Old houses do carry it better because the softer plaster walls and wood trim give the colors room to breathe, but I've seen it work in a modern space too if you keep the mustard to a single piece like a sofa.
