Vent: learned to preheat my rod oven with scrap ends from the rack, cut my dry time down to 20 minutes
Back when I was just starting out in the trade, we'd always load up a fresh can of 7018 and burn rod after rod just waiting for the flux to stop spitting and popping. A old hand at the shop in Gary showed me to toss a handful of stub ends in the oven first and let them get hot before the new rods go in. Now when I pull a fresh rod, the moisture is already cooked off and it runs smooth from the first arc instead of the fourth or fifth. Saved me at least half an hour on every job and my welds look cleaner too, no more porosity on the root pass. Anybody else pick up a trick like that from a guy who was too old to care about telling you why it works?
