Update: I thought pre-heating a 3/4 inch plate for a patch was a waste of time until a job in Gary.

We had a cold crack run six inches on a seam I swore was solid, and the foreman just said 'told you so' with a grunt. Anyone else run into that on older pressure vessels?

Man, that's rough. So the crack ran along the weld itself, not the base metal? Makes you wonder about the original heat treatment on that old steel. What kind of pressure were you guys working under when it let go?

Ugh, tell me about it, @jennyt83. That old steel was probably brittle from day one. The weld was just the weak spot that finally gave up.
