Unpopular opinion: I almost skipped the firebox door tolerance check last month in Baton Rouge because a 20 year guy called it a waste of time
I was on a small package boiler job down in Baton Rouge and an old hand with about 20 years in told me the door tolerance check was just something the book guys put in to slow us down. I skipped it on the first unit, and we fired it up and had a small leak at the door that cost us 6 hours of teardown and rework. He was dead wrong, and what got me was how calm he sounded saying it, like it was just common sense. Now I check door gaps with a feeler gauge every single time, no matter who says it is overkill. The guy had made it 20 years on bigger jobs than mine, so his words carried weight, but weight is not the same as right. Any of you had a veteran talk you out of a step and pay for it later?
