TIL a journeyman in Tulsa told me 90% of tube leaks he fixes start at the same 6 inches
I was talking to a 30 year guy out of Local 592 last month and he said almost every leak he chases starts right where the tube meets the drum, not in the middle of the run. Half the crew I work with swears it is a water chemistry thing and the other half blames how guys roll the tubes in. Which side are you on, and what do you check first when a leak pops up?
Course it's the tube seat, that's where all the stress lives. It's like asking if the roof leaks at the nail holes or the shingles, c'mon now. Water chemistry might be eating the metal but it ain't doing it in the middle of a straight run for no reason, it's chewing where the roll meets the drum. Crew arguing about chemistry vs rolling is arguing about which guy gets to hold the flashlight. First thing I do is grab a mirror and a light and look at that six inch zone before I even pull a wrench out.
