That old timer in Philly made me rethink my weld inspection game
Was on a shutdown job outside Allentown last Tuesday when a 30-year fitter tapped my shoulder and pointed at a crack I'd already marked as fine. He said 'you're checking the top pass, not the root cause,' and he was right, my dye pen was only catching surface stuff. He showed me how to grind back 2 inches and hit it with a grinder wheel, found a slag line I missed from 3 days prior. Now I'm second-guessing every single finished joint on my last 5 boiler repads, that's like 140 welds total. Has anyone else had a senior hand completely change how they look at prep work, or was I just sleeping through apprenticeship?
