Switched to a 3/8-inch drive impact for boiler tube rolling after years with a 1/2-inch. The control was way better, but I snapped two adapters.

Man, that's the worst feeling, isn't it? You finally get the feel right and then the hardware lets you down. Sounds like you found the exact weak spot.

We ran into that at the old power plant on unit 3. The smaller drive gives you that nice feel but it doesn't like the side load. You need a really short, stout adapter, like a solid one-piece from Snap-on. Those cheap two-piece ones with the pin will always shear right at the collar.

Snap-on adapters are the only ones I trust now.
