Stick welding vs flux core on outdoor pipe work

Spent a rainy Tuesday trying flux core on a 6-inch steam line and it was a mess. Switched back to 6010 rods and finished in half the time with way less cleanup. Anybody else find flux core overrated for outdoor boiler work?

Honestly I switched to 6010 rods for exactly this reason on outdoor pipe work. That flux core just couldn't handle the wind and damp metal no matter how I adjusted the settings. Preheating the pipe helped some but honestly the rod was still way easier to control and gave me better penetration in the end.

Have you tried preheating the pipe first before switching rods?
