PSA: I was using the wrong torch tip for years on 1/2 inch plate
I was cutting some 1/2 inch plate for a pressure vessel last week, and my cut was just awful, all jagged and slow. My foreman, Mike, walked by and asked why I was using a number 3 tip. He said for that thickness, a number 5 gives a much cleaner, hotter cut. I switched and it was like night and day. Has anyone else had a simple tip change make that big a difference?

Remember my buddy who kept burning through thinner sheet metal?

You said it was like night and day with the number 5 tip. I have to ask - were you using the right gas pressure too? Most guys I know just set it and forget it, but with a bigger tip you usually need to crank up the oxygen a good bit. I tried switching from a number 2 to a number 4 on some 3/8 plate last month, still had a bad cut. Turned out my pressure was too low for the bigger tip. Once I bumped it up, it cleaned right up. Just something to check if you haven't already. That foreman of yours sounds like he knows his stuff.
