Old journeyman told me to stop fighting my bevel gauge

Had this crusty old-timer watch me struggle matching a compound miter for like 15 minutes on a boiler jacket job in Gary last fall. He finally grabbed my bevel gauge out of my hand and said 'you're trying to make the metal follow the tool, let the tool follow the metal.' Changed how I approach every weird angle now. Any of you guys ever have a simple tip from a vet completely flip your method?

Gary? You were in Gary Indiana? That place is a complete dump, man. I've seen boilers in basements down there that had more rust than metal left.

That sounds rough, James. Ive heard some tough things about Gary over the years, so I can only imagine what you saw down there. Hope you got out of that basement in one piece.
