Old boilermaker in Gary showed me how to check a tube sheet with a flashlight, and I still use it
About 4 years back I was helping on a boiler retube job at a mill in Gary, Indiana, and this older guy named Dale pulled me aside after I'd been fighting to see the tube holes clearly. He said to shine the light across the sheet at an angle instead of straight down, because the shadow shows you every burr and rolled edge you'd miss. I tried it and found 3 tubes I'd almost walked right past that needed reaming before we set the new ones. Dale said he'd been doing it that way for over 30 years and never had a leaker come back on him. It sounds like a small thing but it saved us probably a full day of rework down the line. Just wondering if anyone else was taught this trick or if you all have a different way to check tube sheets before assembly.
