My hawk clamp slipped on a tank seam in Tulsa and it changed how I check my grip
I was tacking a 3/8 shell plate near the manway when the clamp let go and threw my stinger into the weld pool, so now I torque every clamp to 25 ft-lbs before I even strike an arc, has anyone else had a clamp fail mid-fit-up and switch their whole routine?

25 ft-lbs? Man, that stinger hitting the weld pool is the stuff nightmares are made of. I had a clamp pop on a vertical seam once and it nearly dropped a whole section of pipe on my foot, but nothing that wild with the arc going. You must have jumped ten feet in the air. Torquing every single clamp before you strike seems like a pain in the ass, but I get it. One bad throw like that and you're rechecking everything for the rest of your life.
