Hit me today just how different boiler tube specs are between old and new builds
I was going through a boiler replacement job down in Baton Rouge last week and pulled the old tube sheets out. The original tubes from 1978 had a wall thickness almost double what the new spec called for. I found it in the old maintenance log the plant foreman kept in a drawer. These old units were built like tanks compared to modern efficiency-focused designs. Has anyone else run into crazy old specs that made you double check your work?

Wait, half the metal thickness? Isn't that asking for trouble?

Wait, you think half thickness is sketchy? My buddy Jake tried that on his old Subaru - he was all 'oh it'll be fine, it's just a winter beater'. Three months later his control arm snapped while he was merging onto the highway. The thing cracked right at the weld point where he'd thinned it too much. Cost him way more in towing and a new arm than if he'd just used the right gauge in the first place. Honestly, I'd rather run a reinforcement plate than gamble with suspension parts.
