Fine tip chipping on 1-inch plate, anyone fighting this?

I keep seeing guys run their gouging rods way too hot on thicker steel and it leaves this nasty fine tip that takes forever to grind out. Switched to a 3/8" carbon rod at about 400 amps on that 1-inch stuff over at the job site in Gary last week and the slag just peeled off clean. You running a different amperage or rod size for the heavy plate, or is it just me who thinks the book settings are off?

You ever watch a buddy try to fix that with a flap disc and just give up halfway through? My friend down in Tulsa had the same issue, kept burning rods at the book settings till someone told him to drop the amps and go with a bigger rod. Night and day difference, he said the gouge came out so clean he almost didn't believe it.
