Finally got a stubborn flange to seal on a boiler in an old school building

We were replacing a section of feed line in the basement of a 1920s school in Tacoma, and the new flange just would not seat right. I ended up taking a fine file to the mating surface for about 20 minutes to clean up some old pitting, and that did the trick. Has anyone else had to get creative with an old, uneven surface to make a seal hold?

Old buildings fight back. Sometimes a little filing is the only way to win.

Reminds me of the old door in my last apartment. That thing had settled so much you needed to lift it just to close the latch. Landlord called it "character." I called it a nightly shoulder workout. Ended up taking a plane to the bottom edge every six months just to keep peace with it.
