Field welds vs shop welds, which do you trust more under pressure?
Had a job last month on a water tower in Tulsa where the foreman wanted us to run all the root passes in the field with stick, but the engineer's spec said we should have pulled the sections into the shop for TIG. We ended up doing 14 field welds on-site and passed every x-ray, but that wind and rain made it hell. Shop welds are cleaner and easier to control, but field welds prove you can handle the real deal. Which one do you guys prefer when the schedule forces the call, and has anyone else had a shop weld fail while the field ones held?
