Bought a $220 tube roller for a job in Gary, and it sat in my shop for 8 months
I picked up a used manual tube roller last spring because I thought we'd be doing more small-bore spool work at the Gary refinery. Turns out the contractor went with pre-fab spools from another shop, so it sat under a tarp until I sold it last month for $90. That's $130 gone, plus the 60 mile round trip to pick it up. Lesson I keep relearning: don't buy tooling until the PO is signed. Has anyone else gotten burned buying gear for work that didn't come through, and how do you decide when to pull the trigger?
Did your buddy ever try to rent instead of buy for those one-off jobs? A friend of mine dropped close to a grand on a pipe beveler for a maybe-job, then the GC pulled the plug and it sat in his garage for a year. He finally started checking with the rental yard first, and it saved him from two more dumb buys.
