A retired pipefitter in Gary told me my 3/16 root gap was too wide, and I've been thinking about it all week
I was grabbing coffee at a diner in Gary last week when an old pipefitter started chatting with me about boiler work. He asked what gap I run on my root and I said 3/16, and he just shook his head and said "you're fighting yourself before you even strike an arc." He pulled out a notebook and showed me a chart he'd kept since 1987 with different gap sizes for different wall thicknesses, and his numbers were tighter than what I was taught. I tried a 1/8 gap on a test coupon yesterday and the root went in smoother than anything I've done in months. Now I'm second guessing every joint I've fit up this year, and my foreman says I'm overthinking it. The guy didn't even work boilers anymore, just stopped in for pie, but he clearly knew his stuff. Has anyone else had an old timer drop knowledge on them like that, and did you actually change how you work or just nod and forget it?
