A boilermaker in Gary told me his trick for keeping tube sheets from warping
I was grabbing coffee after a shutdown in Gary and this old hand told me he tacks his tube sheets in a star pattern instead of running a bead around the edge. He said it keeps the heat spread out and he hasn't had a warped sheet in 12 jobs. Anyone here tack in a pattern like that or do you just run with what the drawing says?
Ran a bead around the edge on every job for 15 years and never warped a sheet doing it the right way. The star tack thing sounds clever but it just moves the problem around, because now you have a bunch of little heat spots instead of one even pass, and you better hope your tacks hold when the real weld goes on. Old timers love their tricks, that does not mean the trick is why the job came out good, could just be he is slow and careful and the star pattern gets the credit. Give me a drawing and a steady hand over a coffee shop story every time.
