Turns out my anvil was the weak link all along

I was having trouble with my hammer blows bouncing back weird on certain pieces. After about 6 months of fighting it I finally looked up the anvil's history with the serial number. The face was worn down way more than I thought, almost 3/16 of an inch in the center from previous owners. I got it resurfaced at a local machine shop for $80 and the difference is night and day. Has anyone else checked the flatness on their anvil face lately?

Almost 3/16 of an inch in the center" just about made me spit out my coffee. That's a huge amount of wear, way more than what most folks would call normal. I mean, you hear about people checking with a straightedge now and then, but that kind of dip would throw off any hammer work in a serious way. I'm honestly surprised it took you 6 months to catch it, but I get it, sometimes you blame your technique before you blame the tool. And $80 to fix it? That sounds like a steal compared to what I've heard others pay for grinding and flattening. Good on you for digging into the serial number too, lot of folks would have just sold it or bought a new one. Makes me want to check mine this weekend, not gonna lie.
