Tried tempering a chisel in my kitchen oven

Was getting bad edges on a new chisel. Threw it in at 400F for an hour, came out way too soft. Learned the hard way that kitchen ovens are junk for precision work. Anyone else got a ghetto tempering story?

Can't believe you actually stuck a chisel in your kitchen oven, that sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

Did you try dropping the temp way lower? I hardend a plane blade one time in my oven and had the same problem. Ended up running it at 300F for two hours then let it cool in the oven with the door cracked. That got me close to right, still had to touch it up with a stone but it held an edge way better than the 400F one.
