That $70 flux I bought from a mystery brand...

Saw a deal online for a giant tub of flux, some brand I never heard of, figured why not and dropped 70 bucks on it. Got it in and it smelled like burnt hair, plus it just sat on the steel like cold grease instead of doing anything. Anyone else get burned by off-brand consumables, or is it just my bad luck with bargains?

My buddy Ron grabbed a pallet of those cheap welding rods once, like a whole box for next to nothing. He was bragging about the deal until he tried to run a bead and the arc kept sputtering out like a dying campfire. The coating flaked off in chunks and left these weird craters in the metal, plus the smoke had this sweet chemical smell that made his eyes water. He spent the whole weekend chasing settings on his machine before he finally admitted the rods were just junk and chunked them. That same week he ordered the good name brand stuff and it ran smooth as butter, so he figured the money he saved was just paying for his time and frustration. Some bargains are just expensive in a different way, you know?
