Spent 2 years hammering too cold, my anvil finally ratted me out
Turns out I was working my mild steel around 1200 degrees instead of the 1500 to 1600 range, and the scale was lying to me in bad light. Last Tuesday in my garage in Columbus, I heard that sharp ringing off my 75 pound anvil and realized the metal was bouncing, not moving. Grabbed my cheap laser thermometer just for kicks and felt like a total goof. Anyone else figure out their heat reading the hard way after years of guessing?
