Just learned a traditional Japanese swordsmith folds steel around 15 times, and I can't stop thinking about the math
I was reading through an old article on tamahagane steel last week and it mentioned that a smith named Yoshindo Yoshihara folds the billet about 15 times during forging. If you double the layers each fold, that's over 32,000 layers by the end. I've only ever done 3 or 4 folds on my own blades and thought that was plenty, so now I'm wondering if I've been way underworking my steel. Does anyone here actually go past 7 or 8 folds, or is there a point where it stops making a difference in the finished blade?
