Just heard a guy at the scrap yard say he only heats his stock to a 'dull red' for twists

I was picking up some old leaf springs in Tacoma and overheard him telling another smith that a bright orange heat makes the metal 'too soft' for a good twist. I've always gone for a bright orange myself, thinking it was more workable. Has anyone else tried working at a lower heat for decorative twists and noticed a difference in the sharpness?

Oh interesting! I read that exact same tip in an old forum post, it really does keep the twist lines crisp.

Huh, weird. I tried that method last year and it made my lines look kinda fuzzy. Maybe it depends on the paper you use.

Actually, rougher paper gives the tip more grip so lines stay cleaner.
