Hit 500 propane tank refills and finally stopped counting

I keep a tally on my shop wall for every tank I burn through, mostly out of habit from tracking fuel costs. Last month I crossed 500 and it hit me that I've probably spent close to $8,000 on gas alone since I started forging full time. Does anyone else keep numbers like that, or am I just weird about the math?

The $8,000 number is probably a bit low, actually. If you're counting 500 refills at an average of $16 each, that's $8,000, but tank prices have gone up a lot in the last few years. I paid $21 for my last 20lb refill back in March, so you might be looking at closer to $10,500 if you bought them all recently. Still, that's a wild milestone to hit and totally worth tracking. I do the same thing with my kiln elements, every time I swap one out I write the date on it and stick it in a jar. It's not weird at all, it just helps you see where the real costs are hiding.
