Finally tried a coal forge after only using propane for years, and the heat control for forge welding is a total game changer.

The coal got my 1084 steel up to a perfect welding temp in about half the time, and I could actually see the color shift in the fire, which let me make a cleaner billet for a Damascus knife blank.

Yeah it's funny how going back to an older way of doing things can feel like an upgrade. I mean we're told new tech is always better, but sometimes the old method just gives you more control, you know? I get that with cooking on a real fire versus a gas stove, you just see and feel the heat differently. Makes me wonder what other stuff we've over-complicated.

Totally get that. I just switched back to a french press after years of a fancy drip machine, and my first week I made coffee so strong you could stand a spoon up in it. I was chasing that "perfect control" and just ended up with motor oil. It's a fine line between getting more feel for the process and just making a huge mess.

Oh man, that reminds me of my buddy who switched to a hand crank coffee grinder. He said he finally understood what "burnt" beans smelled like cause he could go slower. Totally changed his morning cup.
