Finally gave a coal forge a proper shot after years of propane

Always thought they were too messy and hard to control, but a smith up in Vermont let me use his for a day. The heat was just so much more even for forge welding, and I got a cleaner weld on a simple knife blank in one heat than I usually do with my gas rig. Anyone else switch back and have it just click?

What kind of coal were you using in that forge?

Bituminous clumps up and makes a mess of everything. Anthracite is where it's at for steady heat without the trash cleanup. Miller.susan called it right.

Nah, bituminous is way overrated. Anthracite burns cleaner and gets way hotter, honestly.
