Burned through 3 new fire bricks in two weeks because my forge lid sits crooked
I noticed last Tuesday that the bricks lining the floor of my propane forge were cracking way faster than they should. Three bricks gone in about two weeks, which is nuts since the last set lasted me close to a year. Turns out the hinge pin on the lid got worn down and the lid sits about a quarter inch off, so the flame hits the same spot every single heat. I was chasing the problem with coatings and refractory cement when the real fix was a $6 hinge pin from the hardware store. I bent a new pin in my vise and the lid closes flat now, flame spreads even, bricks stopped cracking. I felt like an idiot for not checking the hinge first, but honestly who thinks about the lid when the bricks are what's failing? You get focused on the thing that's breaking and miss the thing causing it. Anyone else run into a cheap part wrecking expensive ones, or am I the only one who does this?
