Broke my favorite hammer at a demo in Columbus, now I'm paranoid about steel quality

Last Saturday I was helping a buddy tear down an old barn near Columbus and my trusty cross peen just snapped at the eye on the third swing into a knot. The steel had a weird grain look when I inspected the break, almost like it was cast instead of forged. I've been hammering for 7 years and never had one fail like that, so now I'm second guessing every tool I grab from the rack. Anyone else ever lost a tool this way and figured out how to spot bad steel before it fails?

Magnets stick to forged steel, not cast junk. Test every tool you own.
