Accidentally left my hammer in the forge overnight, big mistake

Got distracted helping my buddy move an anvil in his shop near Dayton and forgot to pull my rounding hammer out of the coal forge close to midnight. Next morning it had lost its temper completely, the face was dead soft and the handle was charred black, took me 3 hours of re-hardening and drawing back to fix it. Lesson learned, now I always do a final cool-down walk through before I lock up, even if I'm tired. Has anyone else ruined a tool this way or am I just the only one who forgets the basics at 11pm?

Midnight in a coal forge? You are a braver man than me.
