A master smith told me my hammer handles were too short and I was wrecking my elbows
He saw me working at a demo in Flagstaff and pulled me aside. I switched to a 16-inch handle on my cross peen and the pain in my forearm vanished within two weeks. Has anyone else noticed a big difference from changing handle length?

Man, that's such a good point and nobody talks about it. I think the real hidden factor is how handle length changes your hammer's balance and swing arc. When you go shorter, the center of gravity shifts closer to your hand, so your elbow doesn't have to absorb as much shock. It's like the difference between using a heavy sledgehammer and a light ball-peen on the same job. Your body naturally adjusts its mechanics when the weight sits right.

You know, watching my granddad work in his shop back in the 80s really drove this home for me. He always kept a couple of old hammers with different handle lengths for different jobs, and he'd fuss at anyone who grabbed the wrong one. He had this one claw hammer that was maybe an inch shorter than standard, and he used it for finish work because it didn't throw his elbow out after a long day. I remember him telling me once that a short handle makes you use your wrist more and your shoulder less, and your arm will thank you at 60. It's funny how something so simple can make or break your whole day's work.
