Debate: were the first 4 seasons of The Walking Dead actually better than the later seasons or is it just nostalgia?

I just finished rewatching the whole series from Atlanta to the Commonwealth and I'm torn between thinking the early seasons had better character development or if the later seasons just had too many filler episodes, what's your take?

Man, it's like comparing an old carburetor to a fuel injection system. The early seasons had way more time to actually breathe and let characters sit with their choices, you know? Later seasons got too caught up in the "big bad" formula and forgot that the silence between the zombies is where the real drama lives. I'd say it's not just nostalgia, the pacing was genuinely tighter when they had a smaller world to work with.
