Man oh man, I had a buddy who ran into this exact kind of thing. He brought his old steel frame into a shop for a simple brake mount fix, and the guy behind the counter spent twenty minutes telling him how all the brazing was wrong and the whole thing was a ticking time bomb. My friend came out of there feeling like he was riding a death trap, even though the bike had been fine for years. Turns out that framebuilder was just trying to sell him on a new custom frame and made everything sound way worse than it was. Sometimes those swap meet guys are more about flexing their knowledge than actually helping.

Read an article once that said some bike shop guys do this on purpose-scare people into upgrades they don't need. They call it "upselling with fear". Makes you wonder how many perfectly good bikes got scrapped because of one loudmouth.
