Update: I quit using grease on press fit bottom brackets after a noise complaint in Boulder
The creak on a Trek Emonda last month turned out to be my retaining compound habit, not the bearings, and a 15 minute job turned into a 3 hour job because I had to clean blue Loctite off the shell twice, so does anyone else just run dry on carbon shells or am I asking for trouble?
This is the same thing that happens with so many bike jobs, right? We get a system in our head that WORKS, so we stop asking if it actually makes sense. Grease on press fits is one of those things that got passed down like folklore and nobody questions it until something goes WRONG. Then you spend hours cleaning up a mess you created for no reason. I started running carbon shells dry a couple years ago after a guy at a shop told me grease was making his bb creak worse, not better. Haven't had a single issue since, and the install is way faster. The key is a clean, dry interface and the right press tool, no compound needed.
