Unpopular opinion: the shop towel bin is a better parts sorter than any tray I've bought
Three weeks ago I was rebuilding a 90s mountain bike hub in my garage in Boise and kept losing the tiny pawl springs on the floor. Out of frustration I dumped every small part into the lid of a shop towel box I had sitting on the bench. The raised edges stopped anything from rolling off, and I could see all 14 pieces at once instead of digging through little plastic cups. Did the same thing on a bottom bracket job yesterday and it worked just as well. Anyone else using trash as tooling, or am I just cheap?
My buddy owns a shop in Nampa and I gave him so much grief for keeping bolts in an old muffin tin, so this is a little funny to me. Then last winter I was doing the wheel bearings on my truck and kept knocking shims off the bench, and the only thing within reach was an empty yogurt tub. Worked better than the $8 magnetic tray I bought at Harbor Freight, mostly because the parts didn't stick to the sides and I could actually grab them. I still keep real trays around for the big jobs, but half my small parts end up in whatever container is already sitting there. Turns out your shop towel lid and my yogurt tub are the same idea, and I was wrong to laugh at the muffin tin.
