The old timer at the shop in Dayton told me to set cone wrenches to feel, not torque spec
We had a 1980s Schwinn in for a rear hub rebuild and the veteran mechanic training me, Ray, told me to snug the cones by feel and forget the torque wrench on old cup and cone hubs. I figured he was just set in his ways, so I used the spec anyway and got the bearings way too tight, and the wheel dragged bad when it spun. Ray pulled it apart, backed the cones off a quarter turn, and it rolled buttery smooth. I trust him now on anything older than about 1990, but does that same rule hold up on modern sealed hubs or am I going to cook a bearing someday?
