That $14 cassette remover saved my neck, check your spline fit before you crank
I was fighting a lockring that wouldn't budge on an old Shimano hub for nearly 45 minutes, tried every cheater bar trick I knew. A shop vet in Austin told me to stop wasting time and grab a specific Park Tool remover with a 1/2 inch drive socket, not the 3/8. That thing bit into the splines like nothing, and the whole cassette came off in under a minute after that. The secret was the fit, the remover had zero play so it couldn't round out the notches. Now I check the tool before I even start, especially on bikes that sat in a garage for years. How many of you have a lockring that's stripped for good because the tool was slightly too loose?

The fit thing is real, I read somewhere that spline tools are machined to a tolerance and once they wear or get cheap, they grab less and less of the notch. A loose remover basically hammers the spline into mush instead of turning it. I bought a proper one after reading that and it fixed a cassette that had two mangled notches already, it still caught enough to spin it off. So yeah, "tight is tight" works until it doesn't, and then you're buying a new hub. Wish more people talked about checking the tool first before blaming the lockring.

Used to grab whatever remover was lying around and just send it, figured tight is tight lol. But after mangling a stuck spline on an old freehub, I get it now, the right fit makes all the difference. Mine's got zero slop too and it's a night and day difference.
