Shoutout to the old Park Tool chain whip that finally broke on me
I had this old chain whip from the 90s, the one with the wooden handle. It finally snapped in half last Tuesday while I was taking a cassette off a old Trek. That thing had to have done hundreds of jobs over the years. I ended up digging through the shop drawers and found a newer Pedros model that worked fine. Made me wonder if tools back then just lasted longer or if I got lucky with that one. Has anyone else had a go-to tool finally give up the ghost on them?

Made me wonder if tools back then just lasted longer" - that hits home. My old Park Tool chain whip had that same wooden handle, and it finally cracked on me too. But here's the thing, do you think it's the tools themselves that are better or just that we treat old stuff differently? Like I know I was way more careful with that chain whip because it was older and I didn't want to break it. With the newer Pedros tool I feel like I'm less gentle with it because it's more replaceable. Just a thought, your mileage may vary on that one.

I think you're onto something there. It's probably a bit of both, good tools and us being more careful with them.
