I finally understood the point of that weird little notch on the Park Tool BBT-22

It was after the third stripped lockring this month, a customer's vintage Campy hub, that I actually read the instructions. That notch is for holding the lockring tool steady while you break the initial torque, saving the splines. Anyone have a different trick for stubborn lockrings?

Tell me about it... I had the exact same moment of shame last year. Was fighting a lockring on an old Phil Wood hub, just mangling the splines, and my buddy walks over and points at the notch like I'm an idiot. Slid a hex key in there to hold it and it came right off. Felt like I'd been using a hammer as a screwdriver my whole life. That little notch is a total game changer for anything that's been on there a while.

Oh man, same exact story! I was wrestling with a crusty old Shimano lockring, just wrecking the tool, and my shop mentor gave me that look. He jammed a spare 8mm Allen key into the notch against the chainstay for leverage and it popped right off. I felt like a total genius (after feeling like a total fool).
