The day my brisket turned into a hockey puck... and then I won a local comp

So last Saturday at the Franklin County BBQ Throwdown, my 15lb brisket came out so dry and hard I could have used it for a street hockey game. I was mortified, ready to pack up. But then the judges came by for my ribs, which I had actually nailed by accident because I was so distracted by the brisket fail. I ended up taking 2nd place in ribs, and someone bought my brisket as a joke for $5 to feed to their dog. Has anyone else had a comp day go completely sideways only to have one random thing save your whole weekend?

Friend of mine once won chili cookoff with a pot he burnt so bad it tasted smoky on purpose.

On purpose though? That's wild. I had a buddy once who tried to "smoke" his chili by just throwing a handful of mesquite chips directly into the pot while it was bubbling. Said he wanted that "authentic campfire taste." Ended up having to eat it with a spoon while picking out little splinters of wood. Still won third place at our local firehouse cookoff though.
