PSA: My offset smoker cracked mid-cook last Sunday morning

I was about 4 hours into a 10 pound pork shoulder when I heard this loud pop come from the firebox. Looked over and saw a hairline crack running along the weld near the bottom. Had to scramble to move the meat to my backup kettle grill while the temp dropped 40 degrees. I managed to finish the cook but the bark wasn't as good as usual. Has anybody else had a welder fix a crack like this or should I just buy a new smoker?

That "loud pop" would have sent me running inside for a beer, not a backup grill.

Nah, I'm the opposite. That pop is the sound of something going seriously wrong with the grill itself. I'd be more worried about the thing catching fire or the gas line rupturing than grabbing a beer. Running inside to get a backup makes total sense to me, that's just being prepared so the night isn't ruined. Plus, you can't really relax with a beer while you're wondering if your main grill is about to explode.
